  • Friday NBA preview and pick

    7pm ET
New Jersey Nets @ Philadelphia 76ers

The wrong team is favored tonight as the surging New Jersey Nets travel to the city of brotherly love to take on the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Nets have tied a season-high with four straight wins and at 20-14 overall lead the Atlantic division by 3 1/2 games. They have won 13 of their last 16 games and key to their success has been the stellar play of point guard Jason Kidd. He leads the league with six triple-doubles and in his last two games has scored 32 and 35 points. Kidd ranks first in the NBA in assists (9.6 apg) and ninth in steals (1.91 spg).

Following an embarrassing 47 point loss at Memphis back on December 13 the Nets held a fiery but productive team meeting. Since that heated discussion they have played very well to beat the Pistons, Pacers and Knicks on the road and lost to a very solid home team in the Bucks. They have taken care of business against sub-par opposition this season going 8-4 ATS against teams with a losing record. Meantime the 76ers have struggled to a 5-9 ATS and 4-10 SU record against teams with a winning record.

Kenyon Martin will miss tonight as he serves the first of a two-game suspension for fighting. This line most likely would have been Pick-em if he was in the line-up but tonight we expect a good team like the Nets to lift and cover for his absence.

The Nets have dominated division opponents their last three seasons covering the number at a fantastic .645 clip (40-22 ATS). New Jersey often use this time of year to make their run and are a dominant 23-8 ATS in January games since 2001.

The 76ers have had injury problems this season and have struggled to a 16-19 record overall. Allen Iverson missed 12 games before returning for their last two and starters Derrick Coleman (knee) and Aaron McKie (hamstring) are both listed as day-to-day.

At home Philadelphia are a mediocre 9-8 SU and 7-10 ATS. They enter this one off of a comfortable 100-80 home win over the LA Clippers. With that easy win and Allen Iverson back in the line-up some people think that the 76ers are 'back in town' but it will take more than a blow-out victory over a poor road team missing their leading scorer to convince us that they are the real deal. Six times this season Philly has won a game by 10 points or more...and each time they have lost their next game SU.

It's also worth noting that the 76ers are a long-term losing proposition as favorite, going just 55-70 ATS (.440) in this role the last three seasons.

Don't worry about getting a couple of points on the spread tonight....the Nets have won seven of their last eight SU and will continue that red hot run tonight.
