Mike Ditka once said that skinflint Chicago Bears owner, George Halas, threw around nickels like they were manhole covers. Well, regarding the opening line, the Don Best books throw around pennies like they are manhole covers. If these guys ever had a strong opinion on a game, I've yet to see it. Apparently, they lack either the ability or the balls to take a stand that is outside the norm established by CRIS or the Stardust.
My idea of a true BM has always been that of an independent, free-thinking maverick with
his own opinion on every game. Someone like a Gene Mayday. The Don Best BMs are just the opposite--Simon-says robots who can only mimic the great Monty (the CRIS BM). If you believe that these guys are sharp, then you probably believe that OJ was innocent.
Gary Austin represented one extreme, the BM who overwhelmingly interjects his own opinion into every line. The Don Best sportsbooks represent the other extreme, mindless copycats. There is a happy medium, and I believe that the Buddha termed it the Middle Path.
