  • To All Sportsbooks: RE Soccer Betting

This is a letter to all sports books out there that take action on soccer.

For some time now many of us here at Bettorsworld have been looking for sportsbooks that take Asian (handicap) lines on soccer.

To our dismay, we have only found one thus far - Victor Chandler.

Althought Asian lines, as the name suggests, are mainly practiced in the region after which they are named, they are increasingly finding their way into books that take action mainly from other parts of the world. Interwetten and William Hill both offer something similar to handicap lines, though they aren't exactly true Asian lines in that they still offer three choices instead of two.

It seems that a lot of sportsbooks are underestimating the significance of offering Asian lines. Quite a few of us here are willing to open up accounts simply because a book will offer these lines to us. Speaking in terms of economics, the demand is clearly there. But where is the supply? Is Victor Chandler the only book willing to capitalize on the potential out there?

There is also another aspect. Just like a store that entices customers with "buy one get one free" offers plans on those customers also purchasing other products while there, the same applies to these lines. By offering these lines, books will also gain other action from the people who came simply because they were offered Asian lines. In other words, people will come into your "store" simply because you offer Asian lines, but they will end up "buying" much more than that.

My aim, and the aim of those who will contibute their thoughts to this thread, is to convince you, the bookmakers, to offer us the opportunity to bet Asian lines. I'm hoping you will listen and respond to your customers' or prospective customers' suggestions, just as Victor Chandler has done.

What we are looking for are decent 20-cent Asian lines, posted at least a day before the games take place (most soccer lines are available up to a week ahead, sometimes earlier).

Are any books interested in listening to our needs and putting up Asian lines? So far DAS has mentioned that they would offer the lines. Is anyone else planning on entering the market? Please let us know here in this thread.

There is this somewhat dodgy looking
and badly translated place Cons - I did ask DAS about this recently, have to reread reply and see if they said anything.

I too would open at any proven shop offering Asian lines--the league I play most is Spain. (I might add that if the phoneline was toll-free from Spain, several of my amigos over there would likely open up too.)

I would like lines posted a day early or, as an alternative, a fixed chart that would convert the odds of the home team winning on the three-way to an Asian line, eg

Home team pays 1.65 3-way implies home team is -1/2, -1, -110 on the Asian line
      or
Home team pays 2.35 3-way implies home team is draw-no-bet -120 on the Asian line
      etc.

William Hill has a chart available to bettors that converts any 3-way line to Correct Score odds, so one of these could be easy to cook up too I'd think. Heck, I'd even do the first draft.

Lastly, as soccer starts to permeate the American market, a large source of largely untapped revenue for books, I think Americans would prefer a two-way Asian line to three-way soccer odds. Most American sports game bets are two-way...even hockey, where ties are reasonably frequent.

Victor Chandler's done an excellent job and I'd like to see other quality shops match them.

Hartley, as Ambassador of Intertops could you please let us know their stance on this issue. Intertops has strived to achieve a dominant position on the soccer market, offering bets on more leagues than any other book. Would they be willing to further improve their position by offering Asian lines?

Have noticed that Intertops has a few more leagues now, but
          worldbet and worldsportsbook
seemed to have more leagues before.

Easybets offered Asian handicap for all major European games last season and also Euro 2000 but not too sure if they will be offering it this season.

yeah, but with a charge on a tie

intertops seemed to only offer -0.75 lines for that reason I guess

                  In response to Paddy,

Yes, Easybets will be offering Asian Handicap lines for soccer for the all premiership teams taking place in Europe and the majority of International events.

                  Regards

                    Cons,

What about Ladbrokes. They had excellent Asian lines during Euro2000. Do they plan to continue.

                    Shawn,

A chart ... I don't think it is a good idea. Except the cases of -0.5 handicap when Asian line is actually determined by three way line (the only problem is juice adjustment between three way an Asian) I believe that three way doesn't imply anything about the winning margin.

                      Hi,

Darwin All Sports will be offering 20cent Lines on the Premiership when it comes to Asian Handicaps.

We may also extend this to the Serie A depending on the level of interest we get.

If you have any questions, Terry Pattinson is our soccer man, so feel free to call up and ask him any questions you may have on the upcoming soccer leagues.
