Las Vegas hotels bid to collect gambling 'debts'

Two massive Las Vegas hotels want a Canadian court to force two Edmontonians to repay almost $500,000 US in gambling debts, court documents show.
The MGM Grand Hotel and the Bellagio have hired a Calgary law firm to convince an Edmonton court to enforce two United States judgments against the city men.
According to a statement of claim filed in Edmonton's Court of Queen's Bench, the MGM Grand won a lawsuit in Nevada in October 2001 for "breach of contract for credit" against Michael Liu, also known as Wei Chung Michael Liu, of Edmonton.
The United States court ruled that Liu must pay a total of $128,874 US to the MGM Grand Hotel, a $1-billion structure with four 30-storey towers that hold 5,005 guest rooms.
Rooms cost up to $15,000 a night at the hotel that boasts more than 170,000 square feet of gaming area.
A second statement of claim shows the MGM Grand Hotel and the Bellagio hotel have also filed a lawsuit against Sai Wo Chan, also known as Ringo Chan, of Edmonton.
A Nevada court ruled against Chan in April and ordered Chan to pay a total of $230,073 US to the MGM Grand Hotel, says the statement of claim.
The court also ordered that Chan pay $114,646 US to the Bellagio hotel, a $1.6-billion hotel with 3,005 guest rooms, and a 116,000 square-foot casino. Deluxe guest rooms at the Bellagio cost up to $8,000 a night.
Chan was ordered to pay another $20,000 US.
A spokesman for the MGM Grand and Bellagio hotels said from Nevada yesterday the hotels will not comment on ongoing litigation.
Statements of claim are allegations that have yet to be proven in court.
No statement of defence in the suits had been filed at press time.
