Man stole road signs to pay off World Cup debts

A Thai man has been arrested for stealing road signs to pay off his World Cup gambling debts.

The taxi driver from Roi Et in eastern Thailand was caught trying to unscrew a road sign from a pole.

When questioned, the 46-year-old told police he was desperate for cash to pay off his debts.

He intended to sell the stolen signs for 60 cents a pound to a scrap dealer. Police found five more signs in the back of his taxi.

The man told police he had placed a big bet on Korea to win the World Cup and now had to pay back the $55 that he lost.

60 cents a pound? Road signs in America would be worth more than that. There's an idea for all the players in hock to their local bookies---late night sign stealing binges. Those biggies on the Interstate are probably worth a few hundred.
