The 100th goal of the World Cup finals was scored Wednesday, but it took the marvels of modern technology to know where it was scored. And who scored it.
At the same moment Milenko Acimovic of Slovenia scored in first-half injury time, in Seogwipo, South Korea, 270 miles away in Daejeon, Gaizka Mendieta was putting in Spain's goal in its match against South Africa.
They were the 100th and 101st goals of the tournament. But which was which?
FIFA had the answer.
"We were watching on a split screen and I can tell you that Acimovic beat Mendieta by about five seconds," spokesman Keith Cooper said.
Spain beat South Africa 3-2, while Slovenia lost to Paraguay 3-1. Spain and Paraguay advanced from Group B.
