Stardust,
I'm no internet expert, and I am comparatively late to the whole internet thing, but what happens often is that people put up a website selling whatever and don't truly realize the effort necessary to get sales from it. You hear people, especially here on the West Coast, talk about putting up a site and "getting on search engines" etc......... Sure, but it is in fact a real process. Ultimately money overcomes almost all obstacles, but if you don't have or don't plan on spending the money on promoting your site, it'll just languish there. Also, I don't think people realize how high maintenance the internet really is. It's not just a question of money in the hard sense, but rather money spent on "labor" and "time to maintain and update ones sight". I spend an average of 2 hrs a day just answering email. The internet has raised customer service expectations to a very high level. Before the internet, if you bought something mailorder, you would rarely contact a company about your order unless it was VERY late or it was damaged. Now, it's a totally different situation................and this applies to internet or non-internet sales. Customers will email you left and right. Potential customers will email you left and right. And they expect answers.............quickly. Now, does this make it more likely that they order??? Does this make a customer order MORE items??? Does good customer service magically raise the amount a customer has budgeted to spend on any given month?? Think about it. You here people say, oh the internet is great because it alllows small businesses to compete and reach a worldwide audience. Sure, granted....................but in actuality it gives EVERYONE that same ability, so the net result assumimg everyone puts out a similar effort is nothing. And finally the internet grossly depresses prices. Adjusted for inflation, there are very very few products that are more expensive now as compared to before e-commerce.
Now here is where you get the dissenters story. Husband shoots videos of wife, puts it on a website on the internet and soon they are running a successful part-time business..........with very little effort. True or false?
Answer, absolutely true. I know 2 people who do exactly this. How can that be, given what I've said above? Simple, before the internet, they would have had problems reaching ANY customers, and doing any sales. So for them, the internet is like the advent of the wheel. But try doing what they're doing and try deriving a FULL TIME income, or 2 full-time incomes. Suddenly the effort more than doubles or triples, and suddenly you find that to get double and triple previous sales, you have to lowers prices etc etc. Talk to anyone and they'll tell you..............oh sex is a billion dollar business on the internet. It's true, but the vast majority (90%+) of adult internet sites, don't make shit! That's the truth.
