While speaking with some lawyers the other day, I was told that there are many in the Costa Rican government who are going to seek the removal of the majority of the sportsbooks for several reasons:
1. The unsavory "businessmen" that are beginning to set up shop
2. The flood of unregulated and often unstable operations cropping up.
3. While the industry provides thousands of well-paid jobs for its citizens, and puts money in the banks, the pressure from the U.S. on the banking issues and the fact that many of the employees are young teenagers or those in their low twenties that drop out of school and sacrifice thei education to become bookies--making them less useful to the workforce in the future.
Costa Rica isn't as forward with their legislation as is the U.S., so it will be interesting to see what pops up over the next few months.
