The congressional emails are not standardized. You can find them in your phone book or at
http://www.house.gov
and
http://www.senate.gov
My sentors and representatives had the following addresses:
senator@boxer.senate.gov
senator@feinstein.senate.gov
sf.nancy@mail.house.gov
My President's email address is
president@whitehouse.gov
The above should be the same for most of us.
Anyway here is a copy of what I sent all of them. I hope you all send something similar.
The Honorable George W. Bush
President of the United States of America
Washington, D.C.
Dear Mr. President: 10/09/2001
I find it appalling that members of Congress are taking advantage of this national crisis to help
advance their own right wing social agenda! I am specifically referring to what was jammed deep
into the "Anti-Terrorist Financing Bill" that was announced by the U.S. House Financial Services
Committee last week. Representative James Leach (R-Iowa) managed to insert legislation titled,
"Section 303: Prohibition on Acceptance of Any Bank Instrument for Unlawful Internet Gambling."
No matter what your position on gambling is HOW CAN INTERNET GAMBLING POSSIBLY RELATE TO
TERRORISM???
The answer is it doesn't. It is just one more case of a Congressman sneaking in legislation that
can't stand up on it's own. It is an insult to all who have been affected by last month's tragedy to
even mention anti-internet gambling language in the anti-terrorism bill. Representative Leach and
any other member of Congress who supports this abuse of the legislative process should be
embarrassed and ashamed of themselves.
The section of the bill I am referring to is just one more example of the U.S. (or a vocal minority)
overstepping it's jurisdiction and trying to force it's values on the rest of the world. There was
another bill known as the "Internet Gambling Prohibition Act" that has floated around Congress the
past few years thanks to Senator Kyl and Representative Goodlatte. It has never made it all of the
way. There are thousands of companies around the world engaged in internet gambling including
many in England. And the last time I checked the pillars of civilization were not crumbling in
London.
Politicians like to continually throw out the term "money laundering" to make the industry sound
dirty. Don't be fooled. There are no legitimate internet gambling companies engaged in money
laundering. There may be money launderers who set up internet gambling companies to help them
facilitate their dirty work. This is no different from when criminals set up other businesses but you
shouldn't condemn the industry because a few use it as a front for criminal activity. We in the
industry are all for prosecuting those people in the internet gambling business who are just using it
as a facade for an illegal venture.
Please also note that they make many exceptions in the bills to carve out loop holes for all of their
friends including the onshore casinos, fantasy leagues, racetracks, and of course the sacred state
lotteries. Both the latest financial bill and the old Kyl bill are pure swiss cheese.
As the Founder and former President of World Sports Exchange, WSEX.com, the largest internet
sportsbook in the world, I have witnessed firsthand the dangers of placing politics before public
welfare. Despite the fact that I have been persecuted, indicted, and convicted by the United States
my company is bigger than ever. The story of my trial is an ugly one, it is the story of an
overzealous prosecutor following orders from large corporate interests and an old curmudgeon of a
judge who took the case away from my jury. Despite everything that has transpired I still maintain
my innocence and my principles. I did nothing wrong and I will be vindicated in the end.
It is finally interesting to note that Senator Kyl, as the ranking Republican on the Senate
Intelligence Committee, recently appeared on Larry King Live. When asked how our intelligence
missed the build up to September 11th's tragedy all he could say was, "We don't know." Maybe if
there was an offshore sportsbook or casino in Afghanistan he might have known more about what
was going on there.
Sincerely,
Jay Cohen
