  • Computer Sports World - Phasing Out?

For quite a few years, many handicappers have depended on Computer Sports World for game data. The most important aspect of this data was consistency of formats. The data could be easily imported into their own database or statistics program, and used however they wished.

Now, in possibly the first major departure from that philosophy, CSW has decided not to offer their NFL boxscores. It seems that they believe that the individual player data is only useful for fantasy leagues, so they will simply substitute Sportsticker boxscores instead. So everyone that previously imported that data will have to find a new way to do it.

But that's not all. There are already plans to drop the CSW baseball boxscores next season. Their unique way of organizing the boxscore data into tables, and assigning unique player ID numbers, allowed handicappers to import that data and calculate their own statistics. No more.

For me, I will probably drop my CSW subscription next year, as it will become useless. There are plenty of information and statistics available on sites such as ESPN for free. The reason to pay for a sports data service will no longer be there.

It will be interesting to see if another company like DonBest will step up and offer a similar product.

I wonder if this will have any impact on their handicapping program, which is great for baseball. The stats were downloaded from their site.
