  • Who's Right--sportingbetUSA or me?

I'm posting this for two reasons. One is I think I'm right, and I believe a lot of other people will think like I do, and would want this information when choosing a new sportsbook. Secondly, if there are players or books, that think I'm wrong, help me to understand why I'm wrong, because sportingbetUSA hasn't convinced me.

Before I explain the situation, I will say I've been playing w/ them for at least two monthes and have never had a problem. They've always been very nice, even during our disagreement here, and I have received a sizeable payout or two from them in the past.

I was placing wagers last night when I noticed sportingbetUSA had a line that looked wrong to me. It was +1 1/2 runs @ -125 on Colorado Rockies at home. The closest line I could find at the other 11 books I was using was +1 1/2 runs @ -165--this was at Grand Central. I called sportingbetUSA to tell them I thought the line was wrong. The clerk told me she would talk to her supervisor. The supervisor picked up the phone and I told him the line was incorrect. He told me "No, that is our line." I told him, "Well then OK, I'll take a dime on the Rockies on the run line." He said, "Our limit is a nickel on the run line." I said, "That's fine." He verified the wager and I asked for his name.

This took place approximately 20 minutes to 9:00 p.m. EST. I recieved an e-mail on/at "Tue, 4 Sep 2001 18:18:24 -0700"--this is the time and date that was on the e-mail--stating:

"This e-mail is to inform you that the Baseball game between the Colorado
Rockies and the Los Angeles Dodgers was misposted. The run-line was posted
at +1½ (-125) when in reality the line should have been -1½ (+170). Abiding
to our policies, and the standards in the gaming industry, sportingbetUSA
cannot be held responsible for any typing or human error in posting odds
other than those intended. In the event that this occurs, Sportingbet.com
reserves the right to either void any affected bets (wagers) or to correct
the error and settle the affected bets at the correct odds. For this reason
the money that you had at risk on that line has been refunded to your
    account."

I called late last night, and then again this afternoon to try and get this straightened out. I've been told, "Thank you for calling in and informing us. For that we'll give you $50, but we must grade your wager as no action."

I feel it should have been graded as a winner.

    Ghostly,

Call in and ask to speak with Gerry. He will take care of this.

Same thing happened to me last year at another book. If the linemakers or supervisors don't know a bad line when told it is bad as a favor and take the bet, they have to eat it!

It should be noted that ghostly handled it the right way by notifying the book before playing the bad line.

Just playing a bad line would be a different story.

Although this does bring up the age old question of just what constitues a bad line..........

I called and talked to Gerry. He apologized and said the two supervisors I tried to get it straightened out w/ did not check to make sure what they were telling me was the correct decision. They are going to grade the wager as a winner.

I would like to thank this site and others like it that help players to not get taken advantage of as often as they might.

SBUSA wishes to apologize to Ghostly for the problem regarding his wager.

SBUSA is paying Ghostly because as he stated he did advise the floor supervisor that he felt the line was in error.

The new floor supervisor should have alerted the linesman in the pit about this situation.

Instead he told the player that is our line and he could have a bet.

The situation occurred just as Ghostly described it and again SBUSA wishes to apologize for this situation.
