INTERTOPS.COM LISTS CROUCH AS EARLY FAVORITE TO WIN HEISMAN

ST. JOHN’S, ANTIGUA (August 29, 2001)—With the 2001 college football season kicking off this past weekend, the race for the Heisman Trophy is again wide open. Every year pre-season hype points to a number of worthy candidates – this year is no different with University of Oregon boosters paying $250,000 for a 10-story billboard in midtown Manhattan to promote Quarterback Joey Harrington for this year’s award. Realizing the enormous attention paid to the Heisman Trophy, today Intertops.com released odds for who will be crowned the nation’s best college player at The Downtown Athletic Club in December.

The Internet’s first and largest sports betting site, Intertops.com has made Eric Crouch, Senior Quarterback, Nebraska, the early favorite to run and pass his way to this year’s Heisman at 3/1 odds. Following on Crouch’s heels are Ken Simonton, Senior Running Back, Oregon State (4/1), Damien Anderson, Senior Running Back, Northwestern (5/1) and Chris Simms, Junior Quarterback, Texas (6/1).

“When creating the odds for the Heisman Trophy race, we took a number of factors into consideration including the strength of schedule, national media exposure, past success of each candidate and most importantly the fact that since 1935 the trophy has been awarded to a junior only twice,” said Simon Noble, CEO and co-founder of Intertops.com. “Because of his ability to run the option attack, the amount of television exposure and that Nebraska should be vying for this year’s National Championship, Eric Crouch has emerged as our favorite to win this year’s Heisman.”

Intertops.com has listed individual odds for several other players that could easily be named the top college football player in 2001. They include: Woodrow Dantzler, Senior QB, Clemson (8/1); Ken Dorsey, Junior QB, Miami-Florida (10/1); T.J. Duckett, Junior RB, Michigan State (12/1); Joey Harrington, Senior QB, Oregon (15/1); Lee Suggs, Junior RB, Virginia Tech (20/1); George Godsey, Senior QB, Georgia Tech (20/1); DeShaun Foster, Senior RB, UCLA (25/1); Antonio Bryant, Junior WR, Pittsburgh (30/1); and Kurt Kittner, Senior QB, Illinois (40/1). All other NCAA football players not mentioned have been included in ‘the Field’ currently listed at 30/1 odds.

“If he remains healthy, Ken Simonton is virtually a lock to become the only player in PAC –10 history to rush for over 1,000 yards in four straight seasons,” continued Mr. Noble. “As the fifth place finisher in last year’s Heisman vote, Damien Anderson will again vie for the rushing title this season as Northwestern’s offensive line and up tempo offense continues to open up holes for the Big Ten’s pre-season player of the year. Although Texas is our early favorite to win this year’s national championship, Chris Simms is only a junior so he is out of our top three.”

Current odds listed are subject to change depending on player performance/injuries and bets received.
