good article-- I know intertops offers it, there headstart could be smart move--

THE FUTURE OF WIRELESS WAGERING -- by Payton

The wireless revolution is here. You can't walk down the street without seeing someone openly chatting on their cell phone, or sitting on park bench madly pecking away on their Palm. What's exciting about this new mode of communication is that mobile phones and PDA (Personal Digital Assistants) will become MUCH MORE than simple voice and text message delivery devices. Soon these devices will turn into an extension of our wallets -- allowing quick payment transactions that will zap us into the next phase of E-Commerce. Early estimates state that (connected) mobile device users will match the number of Web-enabled PC users by the year 2004.

Online gambling has been reaping the financial rewards of PC-based wagering for years. However, the functionality of the wireless devices allow gamblers even more flexibility.

Wireless Wager (wirelesswager.com), a company founded by online gambling professionals, is taking interactive wagering to the next level. Wireless Wager works by taking existing web content (or online gambling) and transfering it to wireless applications. The custom applications are developed to allow users to place wagers through wireless devices, such as cell phones or PDAs.

Recently, we sat down with the President (David Freemon) and also the CTO (Martin Schrick) to discuss the Wireless Wager concept:

    Q. Why is wireless wagering the next step in interactive gambling?

David Freemon: Wireless is a perfect fit for interactive wagering because it will have all the advantages of PC wagering with the added mobility. So, you won’t need to be anchored to your PC anymore to make the wager.

Martin Schrick: And, companies won’t necessarily have to re-engineer their entire systems. They can basically work off of their existing architectures and build a "wireless wrapper" on top of it.

    Q. What are the impediments to creating these new wireless applications?

Schrick: As with any fairly new technology, there are hurdles to cross. For instance, currently you can only send a fraction of the data over wireless that you can send to a PC. And also adoption rates have been slower in North America than first thought. But some of the same problems were faced when the Internet started and PCs were the receiving device.

Freemon: There is always risk in a new technology. But that’s what our industry is all about, isn’t it? And the benefits of being first to market can’t be overestimated. The wireless revolution will happen, and it just depends on who wants to take advantage of it.

    Q. What does Wireless Wager bring to the table? What do you actually do?

Freemon: We have a lot of experience in building and marketing online gambling. We were there in the beginning, so we know the mistakes that were made the first time.

Schrick: And were working with solid, proven technical partners who have already built killer mobile applications. We understand the architectures and technical requirements and can communicate these to both the clients and the end-users. We actually build the system and supply whatever hardware and software the clients will need as well as consulting services.

    Q. What kind of clients are you working with?

Freemon: We can’t list any names right now, because we are in negotiations. But these are solid, successful online gaming entities that want to move some of their operations to wireless. We think the users will benefit in the long run.

Schrick: It has to be stressed that that wireless is an add-on benefit. Users will still be able to wager over the PC. But now they’ll also be able to send and receive wagers over devices as well.

    Q. What makes wireless so exciting?

Schrick: Going through the first phases of the Internet revolution was exciting. At first we faced a lot of resistance. I can’t tell you how many times I heard "you’ll never get anyone to use their credit card on the Internet!" Getting wireless applications started is even better because we’ve learned a lot about what clients and users need already.

Freemon: It’s really satisfying to see people use these applications. The whole goal is to build useful, profitable services, and the end goal is to see that clients and users are happy.

Thanks to both Dave Freemon and Martin Shrick of Wirelesswager.com for their time and exciting insight into the next wave of gambling opportunities.

Good to see books moving forward and embracing the latest technology. Those are the books that will come out ahead in the long run while technology passes the others by.
