  • Collier on mission to stop college betting

Tom Osborne isn't the only person with Nebraska ties working hard to stop gamblers from betting on college athletics.
NU men's basketball coach Barry Collier was among the coaches in Washington last week urging Congress to approve a bill banning gambling on amateur sports.

Nevada is the only state that allows wagering on college athletics, but Collier thinks that's one state too many.

"I feel good about going to Washington and making a statement about right and wrong," Collier said. "Coach Osborne had a great analogy on this. He said if they made counterfeiting legal in one state, where do you think all the counterfeiters would go?"

Collier would like to see all newspapers, including this one, stop running the lines on college sporting events.

Our current practice is to only run the point spreads of college football games on Saturdays during the season. We do that because we think there is some interest in the line among non-bettors. We do not run point spreads for college basketball.

This is an important topic, and I'd like to know how you feel about it. Call or write to let me know what you think about college point spreads appearing in the paper. That empty feeling
