Man pleads guilty in slot cheating
REVIEW-JOURNAL
A Las Vegas man appeared before a federal judge Tuesday and admitted participating in a slot machine cheating ring that operated throughout the country from 1992 through 1999.
Michael Balsamo, 41, pleaded guilty to engaging in an illegal gambling business. He entered the plea as part of a deal that calls for a 33-month prison sentence.
U.S. District Judge Roger Hunt is scheduled to impose Balsamo's punishment July 20.
According to a plea memorandum in the case, Balsamo participated in a "technically proficient" cheating ring that operated in Nevada and other parts of the country. Authorities have described him as one of the leaders of the ring.
Balsamo was one of seven people indicted in July 1999 by a federal grand jury in Las Vegas. He was arrested in September 1999 in Arizona and is being held at the North Las Vegas Detention Center pending sentencing.
The Nevada Gaming Commission voted unanimously in November 1999 to add Balsamo's name to the state's Black Book of individuals who are banned from Nevada's casinos.
Court records describe Balsamo as a career criminal with a history of cheating slot machines.
