Senate to hear sports-bet
testimony
By Dave Tuley
LAS VEGAS - The U.S. Senate
Commerce Committee will hear testimony Thursday morning on the Amateur
Sports Integrity Act, which could have a great impact on Nevada's legal
sports-betting industry.
The bill, sponsored by Sen. John
McCain of Arizona, would amend the federal law that allows Nevada to
conduct betting on college sports. McCain, chair of the Commerce
Committee, is expected to call for a committee vote early next week.
Last year, the committee passed the bill by a 5-4 margin, but
Nevada's senators - Harry Reid and Richard Bryan, who has since retired
-
were able to keep it from going to the full Senate for a vote. With a
new
Senate in place following elections last fall, this hearing is required
by
law before McCain can bring the bill to the Senate floor.
