  • Police powers - where will it stop?

IF this is not a totalitarian police state, what is?

WASHINGTON –– Clarifying the extent of police power in roadside stops, the Supreme Court held that officers can arrest and handcuff people even for minor offenses punishable by a fine. The justices ruled against a driver who was arrested and handcuffed for failing to wear a seat belt.

Gail Atwater was driving her two children home from soccer practice in 1997 in Lago Vista, Texas, when she was stopped by a police officer who had noticed the three were not wearing seat belts.

Texas law allows police to make arrests for routine traffic violations, except for speeding. The officer arrested Atwater, handcuffed her hands behind her back and took her to the city police station. A friend looked after her children and her pickup truck was towed away.

Atwater's mug shot was taken and she was released after posting bond. She later pleaded no contest to the seat belt offense and paid the maximum $50 fine.

thats bizarre, no arrests for speeding, which is dangerous to others, but no seatbelt, which is dangerous to you, you can be?

Might deserve it for driving children around with no seatbelts on, but a little odd.

It's getting way out of control. This gives the police waaaaay to much power. You look at them wrong and you're in cuffs! Whatever happened to the PEOPLE making the laws??? We have to rely on a a handful of old timers to decide our fate?

Hmm, with 3500 votes cast the vote ratio was set the opposite way. Maybe all the gov't people voted first...

Why do pigs get to eat donuts and drink coffee?those are poisons they lead to bad decisions.most are divorced alcholics. Also there is way too many cops in the suburbs and not enough in the drug neighborhoods, that is because most of them are cowards who are scared of the gang bangers, especially in California.
