    Extra Points
    Smells like home cooking
The Giants should remember Tampa Bay fondly. The last time New York went to a Super Bowl was in 1991 when they defeated Buffalo, thanks to Bills kicker Scott Norwood, 20-19 in Super Bowl XXXV.

    talkin’ smack
    “The NFL sucks.”
    — Hunter S. Thompson’s opening line in a
column on espn.com’s Page 2 about how the
playoffs have not reached the promise of the
    regular season this year.
    January 25, 2001
    Odds Are
When Vegas took a look at Super Bowl XXXV before the season began, they saw the St. Louis Rams squaring off against the Tennessee Titans. The preseason odds pegged St. Louis as 3-1 to win the title and the Titans at 8-1. Where did the two true teams that made it to the big game finish up? The Ravens were 22-1 and the Giants were 75-1. Too bad time machines haven’t been invented yet.

    Super Bowl Standings
As far as experience is concerned, the Giants have the edge over Baltimore having been to the big game twice. The Giants are also one of nine teams to have a winning mark in Super Bowl games. All-time standings for Super Bowl participants with winning records:

    Team Record Pct.
    San Francisco 5–0 1.000
    New York Giants 2–0 1.000
    Chicago 1–0 1.000
    New York Jets 1–0 1.000
    Pittsburgh 4–1 .800
    Green Bay 3–1 .750
    Oakland/L.A. 3–1 .750
    Dallas 5–3 .625
    Washington 3–2 .600

    PRIMETIME PLAYERS:
    AFC

    Ray Lewis
    Baltimore Ravens
He scares NFL marketing personnel and NFL offenses equally. Off-the-field problems aside, Lewis simply dominated for Baltimore’s defense, which is being touted as one of the best in NFL history. He led the Ravens with 108 solo tackles and tallied three sacks, two INTs and three fumble recoveries in 2000.

    NFC
Let’s see: He rushed for 1,359 yds. and 18 TDs and added 830 receiving yds. and eight TDs. Can you say awesome? Faulk decimated defenses and tallied the above totals in only 14 regular-season games. The most exciting player in the NFL, Faulk put up MVP-type numbers.

    Hugh Douglas
    Philadelphia Eagles
Douglas was voted by his team as the Eagles’ defensive MVP and as a starter to the NFC Pro Bowl squad. The sixth-year defensive end tallied 15 sacks and set a career-high with 60 tackles. He earned NFC Defensive Player of the Month in September and Player of the Game honors for games 3, 6 and 8.

    WORTH MENTIONING:
Clearly, the Ravens are traveling to Tampa on the strength of their defense, but it was a well-timed burst of offense that got them there. Specifically, the longest pass play in postseason
history, Shannon Sharpe’s 96-yard catch and run for the game’s only touchdown. Grid Speak
    trap, n.
A running play, usually up the middle. An
    offensive lineman, commonly a guard,
allows his defensive opponent to penetrate,
    while blocking someone else.
Another lineman, usually a guard, blind-sides
the defensive lineman who has penetrated.
The name comes from the “trap”
    set by the linemen.
Since Jim Fassel’s bold guarantee that the Giants would make the playoffs, the G-men are a sterling 7–0.

Kerry Collins simply went out and put on one of the greatest shows in playoff history vs. Minnesota. His five TD passes tied a 57- year-old championship game record.

The Giant defense laid the first bagel on the Vikes of Dennis Green’s tenure, which began in 1992.

    Franchise Factoids
The Baltimore Ravens allowed only 165 points, the fewest ever in a 16-game season. The number-one ranked scoring defense has reached 13 previous Super Bowls, winning nine.

Baltimore’s defense was also stingy against the run, allowing an NFL record for fewest rushing yards (970) in a 16-game season. The Ravens’ plus-23 turnover ratio is the best ever for a Super Bowl team.

The New York Giants defense allowed just two runs of 20 or more yards this season, the fewest in the NFL.

Kerr y Collins became the first quarterback in Giants’ history to attempt all of the passes in a season.

The Giants were the only team not to allow a touchdown on a return in the NFL this season.

Tight end Howard Cross is the lone holdover from New York’s Super Bowl XXV team. Guard Glenn Parker (four games with the Bills) has the most Super Bowl experience. Please send all responses to dave@betcbs.com.

    ON TAP THIS WEEKEND:
    Super Bowl XXXV
    Baltimore vs. New York Giants
Super Bowl XXXV should be as exciting as watching paint dry. Well, that's if you don't enjoy a good defensive battle, which you're sure to get when the Giants and Ravens hit the field Jan. 28. The Ravens will look to execute a plan to make Kerr y Collins beat them, by neutralizing the run. The Giants held their opponents to under 100 yards rushing 13 times during the regular season. NY must look to strike early on offense against the Ravens. Baltimore's defense, led by Pro Bowlers Ray Lewis and Sam Adams, has been ferocious.
