In light of the recent and extremely unfortunate security breach at a large offshore sportsbook, IQ-Ludorum (IQ-L) has put together a checklist of items that a sportsbook should have in place to protect its network from intrusion, electronic mischief, industrial espionage and malicious attacks.
Given the high profile that offshore sportsbooks have obtained on the Internet, they make for attractive targets for hackers looking to disrupt sportsbook operations or thieves hoping to steal sportsbook data.
Network security can be a full time job - especially given the large number of server's involved at large sportsbooks. We've summarized the contents of literally hundreds of Microsoft Security Bulletins into the provided checklist. Please take the time required to run through this document.
Specific items to look out for:
Service Packs - ensure that you are on the latest IQL certified Service Pack
IP Addresses - use non-public IPs for your SQL Server
Passwords - don't use "Administrator" as a password. Take the time to come up with a password that prohibits a simple guess and subsequent deduction
Review Microsoft Security Bulletins daily - just in case Microsoft identifies a new security breach.
Another security measure that your sportsbook may consider - hiring a Network Security firm to perform controlled "break-ins" of your system. It's obviously better to have a system compromised in simulation than in real life.
IQ-Ludorum's software has been rigorously tested to ensure that its internal security cannot be compromised. However, poor network security can leave a database (SQL Server in the case of IQ-L) vulnerable to attacks from outsiders.
