    Royal Review
    By Victor Ludorem

A road sign or just a sign of the changing times? This recent weekend devoid of college football felt like a Waffle House without hashbrowns and cigarette smoke. It just doesn’t seem right to me. Perhaps the 2000 NFL season was what Bob Dylan had in mind when he wrote “ Come gather ‘round people wherever you roam and admit that waters around you have grown, and accept that soon you’ll be drenched to the bone. If your time to you is worth savin’ then you better start swimmin’ or you’ll sink like a stone. For the times they are a-changin’.” Early season futures favorites, the Redskins, Jaguars, Rams and Buccaneers, appear to be doing a Greg Louganis swan dive towards the playoff platform. At the same time Baltimore, Oakland, Philadelphia and New Orleans are sprinting for gold like hairy legged hormone-enhanced and bearded East German women swimmers. So the futures are looking good at Royal Sports.
With no college on tap we’ll look at a sixpack of pro teams with lopsided action. Almost everybody played the Eagles-14 on the road against the pathetic shade of Browns from Cleveland. In what looked to all to be a mismatch, QB Donovan McNabb went off on this day throwing 4 TD passes and half the way home to Philly. The Cleves fought hard and scored enough late to cover while losing 35-24. The mistake by the lake continues.
Baltimore pounded on the visiting Chargers 24-3, while a seemingly prophetic 9to1 ratio of wagers was placed every which way on the Ravens-14.5. Straights, parlays, teasers, sweethearts galore all came home a winner for the players only because of 5 San Diego turnovers. The Ravens will provide much needed relief this year to the playoff-drought ridden crabcake capital of the free world.
The once mighty rivalry between the Cowboys and Redskins has lost some pizzazz, but not it’s wagering interest. A ratio of 10to1 felt duped and disappointed with the lethargic play of the Skins under first time starter coach Terry Robiskie. Dallas has again used the old George Allen voodoo doll to beat Washington for the 7th straight victory this time 32-13. The Cowboys were led by QB Anthony (this can’t be) Wright replacing Troy Aikman who suffered his 10th brain transplant on the Texas Stadium turf. Emmitt Smith, one of this scribe’s all time favorites, hurdled more milestones becoming the 3rd RB in NFL history to surpass 15,000 yards AND rushing over 1000 yards for 10 consecutive seasons. Royal Sports salutes Emmitt Smith for his great career and more importantly, a fine job on Sunday.
During this slow time between holidays when Norv Turner, Bobby Knight and Juan Gonzales all look for a new job. The rest of us take time to sit around a warm hearth and sort through early Bowl matchups. Some things never change.
