Royal Review
By Victor Ludorem
Is it just me who feels the Bowl Selection Committee has been so aptly initialed? The BS Committee kind of has a clarion ring to it. Don’t they realize that, no matter how good a job they do or how much computer analysis is quantified, they are just setting themselves up for controversy every time they open their pie-hole. Regardless of who is chosen there will always be valid arguments for several conflicting options. In all my born days, the single greatest factor I’ve seen in college football and the only data that does not compute is EMOTION. If you can make a case for justified overt patriotism, crimes of passion, or temporary insanity then why can’t we have a playoff system to determine the real and true champion. How come the sporting testosterone, hoopla and excitement of the College World Series and Final Four are too bogus for football? I’m not sure whether I am too young or too old to understand.
Now I’ll step off the soapbox to recant last week’s significant action. The Thundering Herd +6 at home upset the W.Michigan Mustangs 19-14. How in the world can a 7-5 team compete in the MAC Championship game while two conference teams with better records watch on TV? I don’t profess to know, but let’s just say we’re glad they did.
A 3to1 ratio of bettors backed the Gators-9.5 chomping and stomping of Auburn 28-6 in the SEC Championship. Steve Spurrier’s senior class earned their first SEC ring and a trip to the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.
The Sooners from OU ran the table out in a Big12 rematch against the KState Wildcats.
This widely viewed Championship battle was hard fought to the wire 27-24. The line went to three late, but most people got –2.5 as Oklahoma completed their regular season undefeated with a date for the national championship game against Florida State.
The Raiders were haunted by the ghost of Frenchy Fuqua in Three Rivers Stadium. The Steelers+3 pulled off a stunning upset over a shivering Oakland squad. Were they really scared or just cold? Speaking of cold, how about Kurt Warner’s return for the Rams? Cold and rusty just like the taste of the bettor’s tonic swallowed with St. Louis-7.5.
The top rated program of the week was the Fred Taylor Show. The Jaguars-14.5 slayed Royal Sports and the Cleveland Browns, 48-0. Most of the world followed several well-known touts in this their game of the year. Looks like we will be paying off this week
