  • Johnny DeMarco predicted books broke?

I recall at the start of football season that Johnny DeMarco predicted here that many many books were 2 bad weekends away from going under ...

Well, the books I know all pretty much say the same thing - this is the worst football season in memory ...

And the recent red hot basketball steam must also be taking its toll ...

One major shop - Las Palmas - threw in the towel and closed its doors (only to be bought out a few days later and reopened).

Yes this is the same Johnny DeMarco that at the same time predicted that 5Dimes was going under (it didn't) and that the Bank of Nevis was going under (it didn't) - but nevertheless even our esteemed reno swears by DeMarco so what is one to think ...

I also recall that Jeff of Bettorsworld, whose opinion I have a great deal of respect for, opined some time ago that the books needed a good football season or else ...

A standard precaution of years past was to pull most of your money before the Super Bowl ...

Any of the experts out there think this is necessary this year?

    MLS,
Seriously, how many books have escrow accounts that match the deposits right now?
The NBA has been great to the books so far.
The are big big probnlems right now.

MLS, red hot steam in the colleges? I've been seeing a lot of two-way action in college hoops and my buy accounts have been losing while my buy-back accounts have been winning. A couple of guys who I talk to who run books told me that they've done well the past month or so.

Any sportsbook reps out there who want to fill us in on how things are currently going in Bookie Land?

I would say December is not the month to pull your money since everyone will try to "stay alive" till Superbowl. Mid January just before Superbowl is the right timing if you kinda feel jittery about your out.

One thing I am sure about. With all the new ones popping out lately, I could bet my whole savings that someone will GO DOWN.

Reno, you're right, there has been a lot of two-way movement. If the middles start landing at a higher rate, some books could get hurt very badly with so many groups battling each other with big amounts of money.

MLS, I think the books started off horribly earlier this season and some may have been close to the brink with another bad month. But the last month or so it seems like they have been able to make some back. I really don't know for sure but it seems like the way the numbers are moving lately, those sides have been doing terrible in the football.

Also, I would see no reason to pull your money out unless your using a book not on the BW list.

I know from talking too a few friends at the larger books that they have been approached about being merged with. Their are alot of books out their having big money problems. watch for the bigger books to takeover books that are in trouble, it's coming real soon.

I'm all for mergers. It is much better to have your account assumed by a stronger book who will pay than a weak book that slips silently into the night...

Ajax makes a great point. This is one area of this business, which is so much different now, than back in the early days a few years back.

Any book that has marketed their business properly, and built a customer base, is worth something to someone (another book).

There are all kinds of deals which can be worked out, which allow the failing book to bow out yet still "save face".

I would still make sure I didn't keep all my eggs in one basket, and definetly would keep more eggs in the baskets that have been around the longest.......
