  • I am Canadian!

I feel like I get hosed a little extra playing offshore because I'm Canadian and play from up here in the Great White North....and I'd like to find a book that is totally Canadian friendly...eh.

My most recent bad experience came courtesy of WWTS, which, don't get me wrong, is a great book.

My account there is in Canadian dollars and last week I transferred in a large amount from WSEX in $US. (WSEX doesn't have Canadian dollar accounts - which is another pet peeve, but I digress). Anyway, WWTS exchanges the money at $1.47 on the dollar and puts it in my account. Well, as all good Canucks could tell you, our dollar is currently in the toilet and the going exchange rate is $1.52.

This little transaction cost me about $500 (US$327) and when I called to complain I got absolutely nowhere.

This, of course, is not unusual. Any Canadian bettor can tell you of the ripoffs he or she has suffered because of nationality.

Just send a Western Union in Canadian dollars to a book that accepts only US dollars and watch about 5% of your money disappear during the exchange courtesy of WU.

Most books consider incoming loonies a bother, a nuisance, or some kind of an attempted ripoff.

Please...someone......tell me you want my business and will treat me fairly, even though I am Canadian.

Oh, yeah and how come every one has Gore/Bush and Clinton/Lazio props and no one has a Chretien/Day/Clark/Duceppe/McDonough prop?

                I feel your pain Bob.

My favourite was when I had a credit card charge back from my Intertops Canadian dollar account. Intertops changed it to US dollars to pay the credit card, then the credit card company changed it back to Canadian dollars to pay me, so I lost twice.

I used to have some of my accounts in Canadian Dollars and some in US dollars. It was a pain trying to keep bet sizes the same so I just switched everything into US dollars.

I think the best solution is to open a US dollar account at a Canadian bank and keep all your betting accounts in US dollars. I haven't done this yet but plan to eventually.

Hey Gord....I'm from the Maritimes myself but the best man at my first wedding was from Garson.

I already have an account at Olympic in $US, but earlier this year I helped a friend set up one in Canadian dollars by transferring a couple of hundred to him and the exchange Olympic accounting gave was at the Western Union rate, which is a complete rip.......I sent him an extra twenty I was so embarrassed.

Giving fair exchange is easy, but no one does it. WWTS used to, but now it's even too much trouble for them.

Mr Bob: My intention in replying to your post was to let Canadian players know that they can establish an account at Olympic Sports in Canadian funds and do all of there transactions in Canadian thus avoiding unfair exchange fees. Now it seems that your beef is more about converting currency than our Canadian freindliness. Our accounts dept. informs me that we pass on the rates and fees that we incur to process currency conversion and that we do this without adding profit for the company. It seems that giving fair exchange is EASY, as you say but GETTING a fair rate is another matter; for the book as well as the player.

Bob if you want to take the NDP to win the election I'll gladly take the bet from you - no sportsbooks needed. In fact I'll even throw in the P.C.'s and the Bloc free of charge.

Also if you want to bet against Mel Lastman winning another term as Toronto Mayor I'll take that bet also .

Seriously you have a good beef about exchange rates, and while the dollar sucks it worked well for me after I cashed in a few thousand Yankee Bucks this week (although I could have gotten even more had I held out). I did keep a few greenbacks for our annual excursion to the U.S. for their cheap thanksgiving turkeys though .

I appreciate your responses gord. Olympic is my favourite out by far. Perhaps I'm in a foul mood because since the start of Daylight Savings time I can feel the great Canadian winter closing in on me.

I have a question about your $Cdn accounts, however. Do they come with limits increased 50% to account for the lower value of the dollar? And if I were to flip my entire $US account to Canadian, could I negotiate a one time exchange rate that would be fair to both parties?
