  • Next stop Belize

As a Costa Rican citizen and without the need of a thorough legal analisis, this situation is just the beginning of a huge snowball.
The possibility of the creation of a new law to regulate Sportsbooks in Costa Rica grows stronger and stronger each day.Our government doesn't want to understand that the only direct beneficiaries are the Costa Rican citizens: clerks, cab drivers, restaurants, landlords, computer and telecommunication technicians, bodyguards:-) and many others.
Now the Costa Rican government wants to imply a license that's going to make more than one medium and small sized company think about packing their bags and moving elsewhere.
A 24 clerk operation in Costa Rica costs a little over than 125K a year; money destined to the government alone. For example, RACSA, social security, municipal patents and importation taxes on high technological
equipment. Plus many other indirect taxes such as the 13% sales tax on anything you buy in this country.
If this situation follows its course and there is no way to reform this law, we have to think of the possibility of moving to Belize. The order would be the Dominican Republic, Antigua, Panama, Margarita,
Curacao and finally Costa Rica. And as for Costa Rica, the government still has a lot to learn about other countries experiences with similar situations. They must open their eyes and see that they already have the golden eggs in their hands and that if they try to regulate sportsbooks with fees and licenses for the politicians personal benefits, they are going to immediately leave Costa Rica out of the competition.
And may I add as a closing comment, this s**t is going to hit the fan and we are going to have to pack our bags and move to Belize.

Sorry to hear this. Governments get greedy and then they end up screwing themselves when no one will put up with their BS policies. Hopefully, you won't end up in Belize. From all accounts, it's a real toilet....

Maybe it is possible to have some form of regulation, with a small tax, which would allow most sportsbooks to remain. The smallest ones might have to sell, which might not be bad for the industry as a whole anyway.
