  • Plus 7 or Minus 7 : What's the difference?

Question let's just say that a book made a mistake and put up a line Washington+7 instead of -7, then they take it upon themselves to cancel my wager and return my money to my account; I must be fair in stating that they can't notify me because I gave them a fake e-mail and they have no phone for me: should they honor my wager or not? Thanks in advance for all of your help.

Barney, I think the answer is no, they need not honor your wager. But it is an interesting question, because it raises a related one: what is the book's responsibility in such a case?

The sportsbook certainly has the responsibility to cancel the wager BEFORE the event starts, and to provide some evidence that this is so. Otherwise, you could have actually been ignorant of the line error and the book could cancel only the winning wagers.

In your case, with no phone number and no valid e-mail address listed at the sportsbook, I don't think you have given them the ability to notify you. So in my opinion they have no other responsibility - the risk is yours.

But in most cases there are plenty of ways to contact the player, and the sportsbook just doesn't try. This is bad. The sportsbok shouldn't just assume that the player knew of the error and "took a shot" at them.

The sportsbook has the responsibility to try by phone or e-mail to notify the player that his play is cancelled.

      Sportshobby,
Thanks for the reply although as you well know I am sure I was hoping for a different response. Any other views from anyone else would be greatly appreciated. Once again thanks for all the help in advance

Most books list the right of recourse to wipeout obvious errors on their part.

It seems by your reply to sportshobby, you knew the line was wrong and tried to take advantage of it.

Seeing as you posted as a JR member, and not your real name, you should be ashamed of yourself.

Don't get me wrong but people trying to take advantage of an obvious error, is what screws the players that simply do not know an error for example when playing bases.

Most people know the line on a MNF game, if they don't they must be in a cave, or just out of a coma.

I am not beating you down personally, but the action and reply you were hoping for.

Kudos to the book for catching it before the game started and did what was right for all parties.

Best of luck and may all your bets be winners.

By the way which book are you speaking of.... I would like to open up an account with them, if I don't have 1 already...

BARNEY, you're lucky. A lot of books would close your account immediately if you provided false information on the application form. You may believe that they require the info so they can hassle you but the truth is that they need it for legal reasons. For example, there are certain states that many books will not take wagers from due to the legal dilemma in those states. Alo in some cases they need the info to prove to the country in which they are operating that they are not involved in money laundering with fake accounts.

Should they have cancelled the bet? Maybe. Should you provide true information - Yes.

          IMO anyways.

books should honor any lines they post that get action. that is what their job/function is. i caught a prop line from ly superbowl that was backwards & blasted away taking both dog sides with two of my books. was in a cant lose situation. my wager was honored (i cannot even recall if it was the backward side i cashed on). on the other side of the coin, the player should give correct info when signing up & giving false info & being deceptive will allow you to harvest the crop that you plant! just my 2 cents worth!

                hart attack,

This reply is similar to another reply I made at another site.

We all have a little larceny in our hearts(no pun). Unfortunately, you got more than the norm. A few years ago during the BC baskets fixes a strange thing happened to one of the cheating bettors. A big eastern office not only did't want to pay the fixers, they wanted to whack them. MORAL: Be careful who you try to cheat.

Back to your style. Sportsbooks are run by humans, not robots. If your game is skulduggery, play just the off side. Otherwise, what this amounts to is scalping/middling with counterfeit money.

hartattack, you only THOUGHT you were in a no-lose situation. Most books will cancel a wager made on an obviously bad line.

If they are of the utmost integrity, they will attempt to contact you to let you know the wager is cancelled. If they are on the bottom of the heap, they might even wait until the contest is over and then decide whether to cancel it (if it wins). But in any case you have a potential loss.
