  • HELP! Does anyone know NFL's rules on tie games?

I need to know FOR SURE if there can still be a tie in the NFL or do they keep on playing until a decision is reached. I forget how it works and need to know if minus 1/2 point is the same as pick 'em. Thanks.

    boomer,

yes, if at the end of the 15 minute overtime the score is still tied, the game is over. this of course is NOT the case in playoffs, championships r super bowls.

Wow. Thanks Brian. You might have saved me a whole lot of coin this year.

Now, do you or anyone else know how many games if any, wound up in a tie last year and the year before.

Ties are basically unheard of in the NFL. The line move from -.5 one way to -.5 the other way is the most insignificant one point difference there is.

          Number of ties:

          2000 so far: 0
          1999: 0
          1998: 0
          1997: 2
          1996: 0
          1995: 0
          1994: 0

And it’s mostly zeroes before that too, back to when they changed the rules to add this overtime period.

I,m pretty sure there were no ties 99 and 98 but believe it or not there were two in 97, one was the Skins and Gints and the other involved the ravens.

you'd be suprised how many players, coaches and refs dont know the rules.seriously

you can drop kick a fg past line of scrimmage.you can fair catch a ball with no time left, and then use kickoff tee from line of scrimmage and kick fg.qbs usually have best hands on the team and should be included in hands team onside kick return, but coaches have no original thoghts since Paul Brown died.

Bill Walsh picked Druckenmiller instead of plummer.Vikings passed on Jevon Kearse, the media has brainwashed people so much that they have people believing Peyton Manning is one of 5 greatest qbs of all time, when he is mediocre at best.
most humans cannot think for themselves.

In the NCAA there can be no ties.

At the end of regulation each team starts at the opponents 35 yrd line and plays until TD, FG, turnover or turnover on downs. Then the other team gets its turn. Whoever scores more points wins.

If after each team has had a turn, there is no winner, this repeats until there is a winner.

Last week's Neb/ND game is a good case in point. The game went into OT. ND got the ball first and kicked a FG. Then it was Neb's turn. If Neb had not scored, ND would have won. If Neb kicked a FG, they would each get another turn. If Neb scored a TD, Neb wins. Neb scored a TD.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Most books include scoring in OT for totals on a game. BEFORE YOU WAGER, VERIFY THIS!!! Also, pointspreads still apply on OT games, as in the above, once the game went to OT, Neb had no chance to cover (-13 pts).

                            Addition to Railbirds comments:

How many times last year did you see NFL coaches screwing up the Challenge rule? How can you not recall Camera's close-ups of red-faced coaches slamming down the Challenge button and scrambling to find their red flags while screaming, trying to get the attention of refs? Quite comical, unless it was your side!

                              Joe,

Nebraska actually still did have a chance to cover once it went into OT (albeit a slim one). If Neb had the ball first and scored a TD and then ND threw a INT on their possession and ran it back, it would result in NEB up by 13 or 14 depending on the PAT. This result actually happend 2 years ago in the PAC 10 I think.
