Landmark, How is the bookie in a no-win situation? The player who makes a past-post play (for whatever reason) is the one at the books mercy. What is to stop the book from waiting til the game is over and if the play lost the bet stands, if it wins the player is notified that the bet was made after the game had started and the bet was voided. I doubt any of the top shops would do this, but I have dealt with some that I wouldn't put it past them.

Ditto Slamdunk,
I like to bet games in the 2nd or 3rd inning with Dunes, you probably dont do that, but you should.
bottom line is you and player are trying to get each others money,if he's a loser player throw him a bone, give him a drink on the house,if he's a consistent winner you tell him he's a cheattyball and 86em.
In Vegas, your ticket is live in that spot.
I guess in the offshore game its a little more personal.

DOGGIE - Once again, you're correct on all counts; you may feel out certain situations differently depending on the player and the circumstances. It would certainly come across as petty to block a player from the bet in this situation. The thing that gets me worked up is players who bet 25-50 religiously - suddenly become high rollers when they see a mistake.
RANDYROHM - Many players can be contacted by e-mail nowadays, so that is one way the book can go on record as to when he cancelled the bet. I feel the book is in a no-win situation, because he either enforces the house rules by not accepting the play (which could rub the player the wrong way), or he could have his house rules quoted against him (if the alleged sneak wants to wiggle out of it when the score turns against him, let's say early in the game). So, depending on the circumstances it can only lead to a headache for the book.
As far as not putting anything past anybody, I can't argue with you on that. Most books are not likely to pull that, but unfortunately on both sides of the counter in this business, it's not the cream - but the s--t that rises to the top.
RAILBIRD - I know you were speaking in general terms, but we here at Charlie's are not actually OUT to get anyone's cash. Like the voice said to Robert Redford in "The Natural", "Just build a book and the money will come." We prefer to run a FAIR game and take our chances from there. We are not impressed by those who try to squirm their way to victory. If they need help beating the 10¢ juice, let 'em try betting Dylan24's Nascar picks, he's rippin them a new hole this year!!
RONBETS - Yes, Jackson Heights. And no I don't resemble Joe Pepitone.
Trivia Time, Ronbets- Which old TV show had the name, "Jackson Heights" in its theme song?
REALITY - We hardly knew ye...

This player was not a wiseguy, just a regular player. He probably did take a shot, but it was our fault and we live with it. I didn't contact the player at all. Like I stated earlier, we already start off with a big advantage with the juice, and we dangled a carrot. I can't fault a player for taking it. In fact, he had 3 dimes in his account and made the play for a nickel. If there is even a remote chance he didn't know the game has started, I'm not going to put him in an uncomfortable position. We ate it and we move on.

I wouldn't question a 10:10 start being open at 10:21 , taking a shot on a 1-0 lead on the Baltimore would have to be looked at as an honest mistake as i wouldnt consider throwin a nickel on O's because of a 1-0 lead. If the player is stupid enough to be doing that , then hell let the play ride out cause you should be looking to keep him around. A few years back it was common to keep plays open a few minutes past the start time as the action was flowing in hard. Like Doggie said regardless the book had it open , and your talking a few minutes into the game for all this guy knew the managers were still walking back from home plate picking their asses.

All due respect , If I bet the O's a nickel on every game they were up 1-0 in the first inning this year, I say i would be a loser , no stats to back it up. I didnt say the Braves or the White Sox , I made the reference to the Baltimore O's. Again I respect your opinion i just dont think too many peopel would fire a nickel on them birds being uo a run in the 5th inning , never mind the first.

I can't dismiss your opinion on this unless someone goes out and does a study on this, so looks like we'll just have to agree to disagree. But I don't believe that team pose large varying degrees of "vulnerability to blow leads" and any examples of big fluctuations over the course of a year is just a random statistical fluctuation. I would bet blind on the closing line of any game where someone has a one-run lead.

Czech,
I guess it just boils down to opinion. I am all for the logic of betting a one run lead all year long, just in this case felt chances of this guy saying , oh **** O's are still on the board and are up 1-0 let me get down for a nickel are more unlikely then not. Again you'd bet the O's , I wouldnt lets call it a rain out.
