  • a question for THE DEVIL or REALITY

Can you explain to me, the reasoning behind
    a sportsbook dealing 2 lines?

There is plenty on this hotly debated topic in the archives.

on your order taking system you can program different players to see different lines. Mostly the double line lets you jack up a public line out of whack while still giving the wiseguys the original line. BM's are saying they want to gamble with the public and not let the wiseguys take the other side

        Oldman,

Intheknow correctly spelled it out. Another reason is that when some offices were forced to take their local business offshore they had many customers that bet a 20c line. With the influx of customers that wanted a 10c line, the offices gave the new customers the dime line and continued dealing 20c to their older less knowledgeable players.

            old man,

another reason to use 2 different lines in football, particularly NFL, is regarding the number 3 .... as touched on in an earlier post by thedevil, many of the less sophisticated players are confused and "turned off" by the use of a moneyline in addition to 2½,3,3½, etc. ... in my opinion, it actually discourages business when you are dealing with squares, to go to 3(-115) because they think they are being screwed, because more times than not, they are going to lay it .... as stated earlier by thedevil, monday mornings are a nightmare regarding claims, because all of these less sophisticated players say they didn't understand it was -3 AND laying 15 cents .... oddly enough, you dont' get any "reverse claims" saying "you guys only took out a nickel juice when i lost that charger bet on sunday" ..... but, such is the nature of the business ..... my point being, it is easier to deal your sharps on an "A" line with 3(ev) and "B" line 2½ or 3 flat depending on your chart and let them buy it rather than to deal the 3(ev) to all and discourage business from your squares, which are your meat and potatoes ..... for some reason the moneylines always seem to throw off the average player, and in my opinion the office hurts itself by dealing these lines to the "average player".
