  • Are You Lonely?

I just got another phone call from the Excalibur. They again wanted to make sure that I was actually in the state of Nevada. How considerate of them! Lonely Nevada residents who are bored should open Vegas phone accounts. They will then get constant phone calls from the sportsbooks, thereby providing them with the regular social intercourse that a psychologically healthy person needs. Even the "Shrink" is now recommending that lonely sportsbettors in Nevada opne phone accounts. The Mirage even states in their new phone recording that random call-backs will be made. And that if they can't get in touch with you by phone, they will have to meet with you in person....Hey, excuse me. I gotta go now. There's a knock at the door. I think it's the Mirage people. I gotta get the cookies I baked for them out of the oven.

        the runners were first,
next target - sports books who offer phone accounts?
There is a lot of INSIDE pressure on the sports books from their OWN internal audit controls as well as from Gaming Commission,
paranoia?/concern is rampant out here as I talk to the book guys, fines are massive!
If phone calls/visits don't appease them.....

          reno,

so what happens if they can't contact you by phone, say, you are using a modem on that line?

            AV2,

If you don't show up on their caller ID(which a modem won't) they simply won't service you.

Maybe someone can explain this to me: How are bettors still calling into Vegas phone accounts from out of state without being caught? I get called nearly every day now, and they know where to call me because my number shows up on their equipment. Could someone simply buy a cellular phone in Nevada with a 702 area code, and then use this phone to call in bets from out of state? And when the sportsbooks call back, could they tell if it was a cellular phone? By the way, it is illegal to make Vegas phone wagers from a celular phone, even if the call originates in the state of Nevada.

                Reno,

According to a former law enforcement now gaming board member, certain electronic stores sell equipment to defeat intrastate only 800 #s. Cell phones are not now acceptable to casino phone accts. They show up on their PBX system. Limit players seem to be under the most scrutiny. They think all "circumvents" are illegal out of state BMs.

If they are worried about illegal bookies then why don't they just try to identify them by cathing them WHEN they call from out of state, freeze their phone accounts, take their money and be done with it?!?! Why should I have to pay for someone else's problem. I think it has to do with pride. Nevada does not to be any more federally regulated than they already are; get rid of the potentially federal law breakers = no regulation = more control = only parlay cards left to bet.

Ronbets, I know guys from California--and perish the thought that when I lived in San Diego I was ever one of them--who, prior to call-backs, were using the equipment you speak of. They'd dial the equipment, situated in Vegas, and it would re-dial the phone account. Therefore, it would appear on the sportsbook equipment as if the call were originating locally. However, with call-backs now instituted, I don't see how anyone, other than with a cell phone with a local number, can deal with the call-backs.

                      What about simple call forwarding?

What have they done to make the illegal boxes no longer work?

I would think someone with a box, and then the call forward feature, could pull it off.

Jeff, call-forwarding was defeated when the books installed number-identification equipment. From what I've been told, when a call is forwarded, the original number shows on the equipment. Thus, someone has to get more expensive equipment that doesn't merely forward the call, it actually re-dials the number from within the state of Nevada. But, what happens when the book calls the re-dial number? You, who originated the call from Podunk or wherever, are not available. And that is the problem.

Call forwarding also shows up on their PBX system. Three-way calling is alerted by 2 short rings vs the normal 5 second ring.

My advice for the would be tempted. The sirens are blaring and the dogs are barking. Hang up and try again later.
