Sportingbet.com founder wins Entrepreneur of the year award
Mark Blandford, Managing Director of Sportingbet.com
(UK) Plc, the first British company to offer
tax-free sports betting, was last night voted
Entrepreneur Of The Year, E-Business category (South
Region).
The Entrepreneur Of The Year awards programme was
founded by Ernst and Young and is co-sponsored by
Citibank, The Times and Vodafone. The evening took
place at Ascot racecourse and was hosted by
Newsnight's Jeremy Paxman.
Blandford beat off stiff competition from fellow
finalists to win the award. The other nominees were
Jeff Maynard (Netstore Plc), Graham Sadd (Infobank
International Holdings plc), Nick Spooner (Entranet)
and Michael Williams (Freecom.net).
The judges were impressed by Blandford's first to
market advantage, his innovative approach to online
betting and his global strategy.
Accepting the award, Blandford praised the
Sportingbet team, largely based in the Channel
Island of Alderney.
He said: "I have managed to attract top class
personnel to Sportingbet. The team has worked hard
to put us in a strong position globally and to take
advantage of the on-line opportunity."
The awards programme is a world-wide event. Mark
Blandford now goes forward to the National
Entrepreneur Of The Year awards to be held in
October.
