Some opinions on Dennis Miller hosting Monday Night Football...

I might get yelled at because this isn't "Sportsbook Rants and Raves", but I thought this merits discussion because it is so outrageous.

I thought the idea of having a host doing commentary or color on a football game was that they had first-hand knowledge as a player or coach.

I'm a fan of Dennis Miller, but c'mon, what's next, Pamela Anderson doing the de La Hoya/Mosley fight. Give me a knowledgeable host who played the game and yes, a sense of humor is just fine.

But Dennis Miller. Does he even know what a down and out is?

Give me a break. If this is successful, watch for other "celebrities" doing commentary on sporting events. I can see the writing on the wall.

For now, I am interested to see how this is going to play out. After all, it was pretty comedic when Dierdorf was there and everyone bitched at each other the entire time.

this is admittedly a move to bring something new to the table in an effort to improve on fallen ratings. if someone wants to laugh on monday nights let them turn on the comedy channel.
i don't think it will attract viewers but instead piss them off. well, if their team is not covering at the time of the joke. if your team is winning (covering) by a large margin, dennis miller will become the funniest guy in the world.

I think you got to give this guy a chance. He's smart. It doesn't take a rocket science to give color(or even a coach). How many times have you said something to a friend and seconds later the color guy says the same thing? At least with Dennis its going to be intelligent and a little bit different. I don't think he's gonna be saying the same thing you were thinking every time.

There's a thread on this topic in the other list with some comments on the MNF commentary team and there is some understanding why for the entertainment value a sarcastic comedian like D.Miller would attract Yahoos...

Butt I'm with you on that this is starting to look like a circus rather that superior sports commentating.

I myself was really surprised about Dennis Miller but if you come and think of it, you don't have to be that knowledgeable to be a commentator as long as you are with somone who is. I don't think Bob Costas ever played the game nor was even a coach but he does World Series & NBA. If you guys noticed (NBC Sunday NBA), the style of commentating is some sort of a balance one. The other guy calls the "inner play" and he calls the current "play by play" of the game and so far it is working. Nobody really knows how capable Dennis will be but I don't see any problem with it as long as the other two don't call and sick, then it will be a big problem.

The whole situation is kind of funny in itself. Look what happened to "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire". It spawned three or four copycat shows.

I can see Sylvester Stallone doing color on the NBA Finals, Whoopi Goldberg broadcasting the Stanley Cup and yes, Pamela Anderson broadcasting the World Seriies (that one I'd kinda like. )

Mark my words, if this flies, you're going to see alot more of this.

"Believe it or not, the first name I put down on a piece of paper was Dennis Miller," Ohlmeyer said Thursday after naming the comedian and ABC college football analyst Dan Fouts as Al Michaels' boothmates on the NFL's top-rated show. Michaels worked last season with former quarterback Boomer Esiason.

"I didn't think Dennis was interested, or if he was capable of being in the booth," said Ohlmeyer, producer in the early years of Monday Night Football. "I thought I could use him a couple times a season for a football rant."

But Miller indicated he was interested and auditioned in Los Angeles with Michaels after the June 10 Belmont Stakes.

"Without a note in front of him, Dennis had information on players and insights that other announcers hadn't offered," Michaels said. "During a break, Don and I walked out, looked at each other and were speechless."

But not Miller, who Ohlmeyer said is expected to fill the role of an analyst, not a stand-up comic.

"I know football like a nerd," Miller said. "I watched every hour of the draft this year. I know (running back) Trung Canidate's 40 time," he said of St. Louis ' top draft choice.

Let's give Dennis a chance.

It's a bold move that I questioned when I first heard, but after finding out that Miller is a closet sports fanatic, I think this is a potential master stroke of genius. This guy is very intelligent and will offer unique insights that he can articulate like no other. In these days of Ray Carruth and Ray Lewis I welcome a harder look at the game and it's players. There very well could be times when he needs to be reeled back in during critical moments of the actual game, but, in all, I still love the idea. Not trying to be argumentative.. just my gut on this.

I like SoCal at first was taken back by Dennis Miller, hell I would rather watch the Chris Rock show on HBO then this cat. But then i thought about the pitiful cast of characters that ESPN throws on us when it comes to the ex jocks/coaches and say damn the pool is thin. I mean Paul Macguire, Joe Theisman, Mark May (i actually listen to the game on radio while i watch it). What the hell lets give this guy a shot as only time will tell.

I thought Boomer E. was pretty good along side "line" punster Al Michaels. But lets face it guys, the networks are desperate. Pro wrestling was more than holding its own head to head Mondays. Maybe Dr. Laura might fill the bill.

It's interesting to find out that at least the guy loves football. I had no idea, if indeed that is true.

Stranger things have happened. Maybe he'll turn out to be the next Howard Cosell in his own style.

Actually, they've already achieved some success as I'll definitely be tuning in just to see how Dennis Miller performs. Time will tell if works or not.

Hell, what do I know, I liked Boomer Esiason.

Ronbets, you gotta be kidding regarding Boomer Esiason. Bettorsworld Boomer could even do a better job than him. Esiason is part of what Howard Cosell called the "Jockocracy." Dennis Miller is an interesting experiment, but my first choice was, of course, Mr Las Vegas, Wayne Newton. My second choice was Cookie Jar, and my third choice was Jimmy "Dynomite" Walker.
