CHINA'S police yesterday issued an ""urgent circular'' calling on their departments nationwide to crack down hard on widespread gambling on the European Championship, the official Xinhua news agency said.
""After the European Football Championship began, gambling activities by illegal opportunists have been incessantly discovered in Beijing, Szechuan and Guangdong and other places,'' it said.
Organised gambling has taken place at venues like karaoke bars, saunas and tea houses and by telephone ""using foreign practices'' and odds set by international bookies, it added.
""A small numbers of international racketeers and betting organisations have also actively infiltrated our borders and have hooked up with and organised locals to participate in gambling,'' the circular said.
