  • can NEVADA SPORTSBOOKS survive on PRO SPORTS betting alone?

If congress somehow pushes this college betting ban thru, can the books absorb
a $900 million reduction in business?

The economy of the whole state ov Nv would suffer from a ban. It would be comparable to a city losing a successful sports team. The casino, a subsidiary of the book, would also take a big hit. Have you ever seen a Saturday A.M. during football or basketball season at any sportsbook? Thriving with wall- to -wall people. NO MORE.

Outlaws in the casinos taking side action? You d have a better chance of getting away with murder! Outlaws otherwise would be resurrected for the locals.

With increased competition from tribes and continual legalization of gaming elsewhere, Nv will take a big hit.

I think it's questionable at this point whether or not sports wagering in Nevada will survive, REGARDLESS of whether the ban goes thru.

Watch and see the big "about face" on this issue. Online US Sport books will be sanctioned by the government (and taxed).

They will tout "regulated, legal" betting, while still being able to talk out the other side of their mouths and portray online offshore betting as "usafe, unregulated" and consequently illegal.

        This is all about money.

Stardust Sonny...Scratch the Nev books from your list of 'Online US Sportsbooks'. Most of them wont even take phone bets now let alone open up to the world or even a portion of it. Try and make a couple wagers on the right side and you will be considered as a criminal. Win and you stand a good chance of being chased. I cant see them going for the online sports action. Now the casino side is different. That they would accomodate. I dont think the Nevada part of the bill will get through anyway...Stardust Scotty

I really think that the Vegas Casinos are being shortsighted.

I have been in Vegas [Stardust] every weekend during football season since about 1984 and all of the changes since about 1993 have been for the worse.

Now - they really want only square action and look at the books as a necessary evil that they have to have because the other casinos have them.

The indian gaming surge in California [regular vegas style slots, etc] will definately hurt the Vegas casinos. Also - I feel that they are only making a half-hearted attempt to defeat the college betting ban. Maybe they feel that there are too many sharps making money on college ball and it will allow them to eliminate that action.

The problem is, a lot of squares also bet college ball. These guys will take their wives, relatives, etc to Vegas instead of the indian casinos because they can bet their games there. Without the college betting - why go to Vegas. Take the wife to Morongo, near Palm Springs. They are building a hotel. You can lay by the pool and let the wife play slots.

Stardust Scotty - What percentage of Vegas visitors come from SoCal?

My guess is that it is about 40-50%. If 30% of these people don't go to Vegas because of SoCal indian casinos, Vegas casinos will obviously lose 15% of their business.

To these people - the only difference between Vegas and "Indian" is sports betting [and table games, which most of them don't play anyway].

I would think that the Casinos would really fight like hell to stop the college ban. I don't think that they are.

Zap...Your handicap of the current situation is 99% right on(I always leave myself an out). The pencil heads say about a third of the visitors are from Cal, although I would go over that total. Palm Springs will put a knot on LV's head, espicially if the geniuses do away with NCAA wagering. Mabey its a coincidence but I ran the Stardust from Christmas '83 till Nov '91...Scotty
