  • Those darned early morning lines!

Every morning there they are, just sitting there. Can you bet them? Sometimes. Sometimes not. Are the lines correct? Sometimes. Sometimes not. What are the limits? Well, it just depends. Can you bet them twice, with some time between for adjusted odds? It depends.

I'm referring to those early morning lines on the Don Best premium screen. Maybe the books think of them as the stale lines from last night's overnight baseball lines. I'm not sure.

Maybe some of you more seasoned bettors can fill me in. For now, I'm just confused.

The early morning lines are an attempt by Don Best, Cris & Caribi to totally eliminate Roxy from the odds making scene. It is one of the smarter "offshore" business decisions I have ever seen made. This action forces most clone shops to follow suit and post these numbers before Roxy ever wakes up.
This is a very smart move by them and it really makes it tough for everybody else.
Olympic tries to be cool posting first, then when the others come out, Olympic immediately changes to match them.

. . . no early risers in this forum to help?

First, Roxy is retired. Second, Vegas openers
no longer have power or influence. Nobody cares what the Stardust puts up, and the lottery is now a joke. Vegas is a fallen sportsbook empire that will probably never be resurrected. The giant offshore stores don't even pay attention to joints like the Dust, Hilton and Excalibur. The offshore books put up overnight lines for one reason: to write more action and make more money.

Regarding ealy morning limits, your best bet is to call each book directly and find out their early morning limits and at what time they go to full limits.

Doesnt the station casinos in LV put up an overnight line for small money?

Reno, that's good advice to just call and find out about the time that the limits change.

But the displayed lines are very often not correct (around 10:00 a.m. Eastern). You can tell by either trying to bet them, or looking at the online odds. I think they should just take them off the screen until they are ready to open up.

sportshobby, if you have any complaints about anything on the Don Best Screen, I suggest that you call Dana, the owner of Don Best. Dana wants to have the best possible product and is always open to suggestions and complaints from subscribers.

JohnnyD...You have much to say when you are not defending yourself from the nonsense. Permit me to tweek your above response a bit. LVSC, Roxy's old office, and Don Best basically deal to different clientele. There is some overlap of course but these two businesses are coming from very different angles. LVSC is in the oddsmaking business. Don Best is in the business of disseminating information. Read between the lines here and understand that a large number of offshore Sportsbooks use LVSC #s(yes early #s too) as well as clients worldwide. If a client wants to put up #s a day early or whenever LVSC will provide them. The sportsbooks have no interest in putting LVSC out of business. For what? Don Best takes information that is already "out there" and packages it in a very efficient presentation. Don Bets has the best, for now, system to get it put there fast. This info is dealt to both sides, player and layer. Its basically a push although it favors the player IMHO. I know about early lines. I ran the Stardust from '83 till 91' and put put up the first #s in every sport every day at 8:00AM just like a bank. In those days it meant something. Of course with the technology of today early #s are not such a big deal(except for a few players)...Scotty

                  Scott...

                  Fascinating post guy.

I would sure like to hear some stories about the Stardust back in the day. The reason I love this forum is to have major players from then and now like yourself post.

I'd sure like to hear about your adventures in the day when the Dust was where the lines originated. Maybe you could share some of those interesting stories ala Reno. We'd sure like to hear them. I've only been doing what I'm doing for less than a couple of years and love to hear stories about the history of this biz.

Puh-leeze. When you find the time.

Boomer...I dont think most players can really grasp what we did at the Stardust. It was an awsome responsiblity. With the computer era now upon us book managers show up and fire up the computer and ,shizam, its all there. The Stardust was the 'computer' then. The whole industry waited for us and not just for the line. We put out the pitchers, time changes & makeup games. We reshearched all the tournaments and put out the correct matchups. We did all the legwork for the other books. Then we put out the line every morning at 8:00am just like a bank. Never failed. Sometimes it wasnt much fun when we were getting our lunch ate. They were truly our #s, we had no where to go to copy them. After we got the line straightened out for everyone then the others would open up. For the first couple years we wrote by hand and graded tickets till mabey 3:00am on a busy day. Try and pay a baseball round robin as soon as it was over. Figure it out with the coustomer waiting and an impatient line behind him also waiting for their cash. On one Superbowl Sunday myself & a cashier paid out 1,700,000$(all live tickets) and were .20cents short. Square business. They were great times. Hope you caught some of it...Scotty

Boomer...Reno is right on. He saw those days. His discription of the situation in LV now is accurate. They are ready to pull the plug and just let it die...Scotty

Reno, you're right about contacting Dana.

I wasn't totally sure if those early lines were SUPPOSED to be correct, thinking that perhaps no one but me was trying to bet at that time of the day.

Yes Old Man, Stations puts up baseball o/n until approx. 11pm. Last year they were taking a nickle a game. However, this year limits have sunk to $3 per game. The companys last quarter earnings were at record levels but they insist they are getting buried booking 3 to 5 dollars per game on overnights. Johnny DeMarco is looking for these early 95% o/n steamers. So am I JDM!!
