When will it be possible to use the "same" account for both Australian/European and American sports? As it is now I have one account but two different balances! It is very annoying when you want to bet something late and have no funds in one "department" and a lot of money in the other. I know you can transfer money between them but sometimes there is no time and this is very annoying.
OZ,
Carnival time always attracts big money. Mark Read is long famous for dealing with some of the wealthiest racing punters in Australia. With the Sydney autumn carnival in recent weeks, those figures don't surprise as it's where their target audience in Australia is.
Hilper,
A little birdie tells me that a new, improved and integrated system maybe just around the corner.
AV,
The keyword with DAS' claim of being the largest is 'independent', ruling out the TABs (once govt-owned) and possibly Centrebet which is now owned by Jupiters. But Centrebet's racing hold would not be a scratch on that at DAS.
We take the opportunity to respond to some of the questions and comments made here.
With regard to the sizes of DAS and Canbet, it is relevant that Mark Read, DAS’s founder, was arguably the most prominent and well known Australian racetrack bookmaker of his generation. Consequently, DAS has a large racebook. On the other hand, Canbet is purely a sportsbook and on the published figures we have seen, at this stage we have a larger sportsbook handle than our friends in Darwin.
The shift of bettors from horse players to sports and the growth of sports betting in Australia is in its very early stages. Figures published for 1997/98 show Australian sports betting handle at just $AUD 266 million ($USD 160m). That is about 2.2% of the racing handle of $AUD12 billion. Figures just published for the fiscal year ended in June 1999 reveal that Australians lost $886.80 per head on gambling. $763.80 was lost to gaming (i.e. slots etc.), $121.59 was lost to racing and $1.40 per head was lost on sports betting.
Those are the reason that Canbet had chosen to focus initially on US sports. We are now moving to other international and Australian sports, and we expect within a year that the handle for non-US sports will about equal that for US sports.
We plan to make the internet the engine for growth and to expand both the limits and the facility for the system to accept a large volume of bets. Inevitably, development takes time and as a general policy we try to avoid the risk of over promising and to let the market judge us for what we are.
Reno, feel free to give us a call. Sportshobby, the limit for MLB totals is $1,000.
I was browsing the Canbet website, and looking to see if there were any promotional specials. The "specials" webpage comes up empty. Does that mean there aren't any?
Canbet, last year I tried to open an account with you but was turned down because you don't accept accounts from Nevada. If the U.S. outlaws internet gambling, will you stop taking bets from U.S. residents?
Not allowing customers from Nevada was the previous managements policy. Our position now is we will accept customers from any jurisdiction - it is, however, the individual customers responsibility to be aware of their local gaming laws.
