  • Sportsbetting Ban in Nevada?

According to today's front page article in the "The Las Vegas Review Journal,"
The NFL and NBA have asked Congress to ban betting on their sports in Nevada. With the bill to ban betting on college sports almost sure to pass, and with the ban of pro sports wagering on the horizon, it may be time for Vegas bookies to start looking for offshore gigs.

Dana, I could be wrong. According to Senator Bryan of Nevada, it's sure to come out of committee, but that doesn't mean it will pass in it's current form. However, knowing the mindset of American politicians, I think it's only a matter of time til amateur sportsbetting is banned in Nevada.

Unfortunately AV, too many college athletic programs are dependent upon what one or two sports will generate from TV revenue. If the gymnastics team wants new equipment for training, they really need the football program to have a good TV contract.

It probably won't pass this year but at some point in the near future it most likely will. Government is becoming more repressive all the time with the mighty United States leading the way. My non-gambling friends say this law won't affect them. I tell them they are wrong. It's just like the cigarette smoking issue. I myself don't smoke and don't particularly enjoy second hand smoke. However I'm still against any kind of anti-smoking legislation since it's just another way the government gives itself more power over the people.

yeah, there is an even better idea, scrap college athletics, scholarships, etc., etc.

                  no gambling problem then!

                      Dana, Reno!!

What exactly do you think would happen if they banned college betting in Vegas. My opinion, nothing.

If they stopped putting lines in the newspapers etc. wouldn't it attract more people to the Don Bests of the world, unless they also weren't allowed to show those lines being based in Vegas or the states. Would offshores get more business? Would they start busting bettors? I don't think the NCAA and the do gooders representing our interests on Capitol Hill realize the amounts of money generated by the gambling populis that wager on these events. Do you think the ratings would drop on televised games if there wasn't any betting on them? OF course. Would the NCAA be getting these billions from the networks if the ratings started to drop? Of course not. Would ND get exclusive contracts for alums to watch without action. No way. It appears that the govt. puts laws on the books without looking at the whole picture. No referendums only 435 Reps and 100 Senators trying to take the pleasures away from countless millions.

I'm starting to see Reno's point where a few goody-two-shoes are trying to determine what's best for me. I don't like it. I'll deceide what I want to do with my money and my free time. Regulations are for those that what to be regulated and opressed, I want neither for myself.

I don't know how to go about letting these idiots know how we feel but I think it's time we start banding together( all the players, books and forums) and let the govt. know exactly how we feel.

                        DEVIL--YOUR RIGHT

....as the reps and senators adjurn to their countless martinis , booze cruises and weekend soirees' satisified they did their job to protect us from ourselves.

The NCAA is run by a bunch of pompous, self-righteous, psuedo-intellectual know- it- alls who should spend more time trying to help these impoverished kids get spending money, than banning them from games because an alumnus bought them lunch, or gave them a bag of used sweaters. furthermore---these idiots don't understand that tv ratings and the resulting revenues (with some exception for a few major teams and games), would be a smudge compared to what it is now. Why would anyone tune into Creighton playing Nebraska, or even a good Tulsa playing Fresno. These lesser known schools wouldn't command a dollar because tv interest without gambling would be miniscule. All the tv games would go to a the top 20 teams and these teams would not be much interested in supporting the lower rung teams and their ailing programs. When their tv ratings fall through the basement, see how fast they will learn what WE GAMBLERS already know!!

Even more suprised by the NBA wanting to ban gambling. Are these people so stupid or vain to think that their popularity is based on the product they sell?? C'mon now. What would their tv ratings be and the advertising dollars generated be?? Would I be tuning into The Indiana/Miami game tonight and the Laker/Sacramento game that follows on TNT??. Heck no----I'd much rather be watching the "diamond extravaganza" on Home Shopping Network or Emeril the Chef prepare Louisisa shrimp au gratin . These teams are not even from my area, and even if they were, I could care less about seeing zillionaires running around on a wooden floor. Hang up a number though----- and my time is reserved.

I'll say this though---more lawns would get mowed and fewer landscapers and building contractors would have jobs. No one thouroughly understands and appreciates the effect we gamblers have on the stateside economy. Can you see the men of America at home Saturday and Sunday during football season feverishly working a paintbrush, mulching flower beds, renting cement mixers and weilding hammers and saws instead of "TV Clickers"?

Nevada Casinos, even though they won't admit it would rather have the more profitable slot machines and table games instead of sportsbooks anyway. They mainly have sportsbooks today to keep their guests from going to another casino that has a book.
If this ban would to take place they could finally get rid of the labor intensive, time consuming, small profit center, called the sportsbook.

What does congress think they are going to accompolish since there are 1000's of illegal BMs in every state in the U.S.?
