One of the biggest scams in the world is insurance...probably second only to organized religion. But since everyone seems so knowlegeable about Lloyds let me pose this. What's the difference between Lloyds and lets say your average American insurance company. Please don't say they're British. What else? All the Brits need to stay out of this one.

Chestrockwells, what's different is that Lloyd's, unlike American companies, will insure virtually anything.

                Chest,
The main difference between Lloyds and American insurers is the liabilty.Lloyds books insurance guaranteeing you will get paid even if it means hocking mothers heirlooms. Each Lloyd underwriter has no limit to liabilty. Now thats what you call real bookmaking.

Reno raises an interesting point. If Lloyd's is distinguished from other insurers because they'll insure "anything", then that means they must develop unique actuarial tables for all the eccentric underwriting they do.

In other words, because of their unique position in the industry, they are already "oddsmakers" for the things they insure.

Since they're already experienced in oddsmaking, wouldn't it be a natural extenision of their business to have partners in the sports wagering industry?

                  Something to think about.

The difference is that Lloyds is probably the most trusted insurer in the world. Their name alone adds a lot more respectability, which is why NASA chose to capitalize on this.

To make it simple, Lloyds is a name that's recognized around the world. Farmers Insurance in Idaho isn't. Plain and simple.
