  • RIO rant!

I requested a partial payout (several dimes) at RIO today.

Since I am no particular hurry I asked it be sent certified mail (free at every other book).

I was informed that it could only be sent WU (fee $150) or UPS (fee $50)! According to RIO certified mail from Costa Rica is not reliable.

I guess if I had $45 in my account and asked to withdraw it I would get nothing but a bill for $5 (since UPS is $50)!

For those that are not familiar with Costa Rica it is the most advanced Central American country. I have received dozens of business documents by certified mail from there over the years - RIO's excuse that certified mail is unreliable is ridiculous.

Needless to say told them what I thought and requested my account be closed and my whole 5 figure balance be sent to me immediately.

RIO makes about $25 profit on their $50 UPS "fee scam" - last year I dropped about 10 dimes there betting - they just lost me as a customer; what a great business decision RIO!

Everytime I have requested pay outs from other books by mail it has taken 4-6 weeks. I was very surprised when Bob got his payout from Intertops in 9 days. Because time is money, I never request payouts by mail any more.

If Rio doesn't bank in the States, are you sure you can get "certified mail" from other countries, especially in Central America?

bsky2, I was suprised it took nine days as well, since it was DHL overnight delivery.

MLS, you are right, they are ripping you off. A lot of places, like SOS will give you one free withdrawl a month (they pay shipping) and good old Intertops paid everything all the time if you were taking out more than $1,000. Even places that make you pay never charge more than $30 in my experience. A bad business practice on their part.

It's a pity that we lose a good customer like MLS, over what apparently is a misunderstanding about our payout services at Rio. We would like to inform all that we have several options regarding payouts. First, let us say that we have had bad experiences using certified mail. However, if a client so requests a check be sent by certified mail and will furnish us with a statement assuming responsibility if the check is lost, then we will send the document. Regarding UPS, we have two different services. The $50 one takes 2-3 days, and the $25 service takes 8-10 days.
Rio does not charge for the Cashiers check. Our main concern is that our customers receive the payouts, and that they are happy campers.

This shows the cost of poorly trained customer service reps.

Since I explained I was in no particular hurry I certainly should have been told about the $25 UPS option, which would have been perfectly acceptable.

Since I play bases primarily at dime shops I will probably wait to repost at RIO until football season ...
