  • Anyone been to Antigua?

I am planning a trip to Antigua with a couple of friends and was wondering if anyone who had been there had any suggestions on accomodations, etc. I would like to visit a few sportsbooks while I am there. The most important considerations would be proximity to sportsbooks, decent watering holes, nice beach/pool area, must be easy to get around (i.e. not secluded). I've read all kinds of reviews on the net and the responses are so mixed I'm more confused than when I started. Any help would be appreciated.

    thanks,

    mikren

    Mikren,

Lived there for a year and a half, best thing the island is small enough so no matter where you stay you will be within 20 30 minutes of most books, realy nice place is St James , a little out of the way compared to most but still close enough. My recommendation is to stay away from the all inclusive as you find yourself bouncing around and away from the hotel.Been a couple of years but Shooters was a nice watering hole back in the days. BUT without a doubt make sure you make it to Shirley Heights on Sunday night.Great beaches , great people and loads of beautiful English and Canadian women (make sure you go by April though, cause May to Sept is hurricane season and the island prety much blows then )also sailing week comes up sometime in April I believe , which is just one big party down in the English Harbor. Bottom line is you'll have a good time as long as you go between Nov-April.Hope that helps.

    Enjoy,

      bigtimehoops,

Did you work for a sportsbook when you lived in Antiqua? I was just wondering how plausible it is to go to Antiqua or Costa Rica and find work for a year. I know it might get to be a grind, but I think I'd learn a ton working the phones and in customer service.

BEFORE YOU PACK UP AND LEAVE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A JOB FIRST.
THE LOCALS IN A LOT OF THESE ISLANDS WORK A LOT CHEAPER THEN WE DO. UNLESS YOU HAVE A LOT OF TALENT OR WANT TO WORK CHEAP JOBS MAY NOT BE THAT EASY TO COME BY.

BESIDES THIS IS NOW THE OFF SEASON FOR A BUNCH OF THE BOOKS.

When you where in Antigua, You didn't happen to stay at tha Royal Antiguan did you?? I do agree that Shirley Heights is the spot and Shooters is still ok. If anyone does hit the Island look up King David (at the Royal). He will have you rolling.

            J,

Yup I did work at a sportsbook and i recommend contacting them as Devil says mostly locals handling the phones these days but if you catch on it will be worth the effort. Might might to start contacting during mid baseball season as if and when they hire it is usually for football.

            Ike,

Stayed at the Royal then up on the hill, and I know King David well, as it seems you do.Best bartender on the island of Antigua hands down. Ike who are you ,maybe we know each other.

The infamous "Mafia Hill". I know it well. The walk up the hill could kill a man. We may have meet on the beach playing volleyball with wayne and the boys.

                bigtimehoops,

I'd like to hear what it was like working for a book. If you don't want to tell us something here, maybe you could e-mail me:

                jfhst18@my-dejanews.com

What were the hours like? What was the pay like? How far away from the office did you live? How did you catch on? Why did you leave? I'm thinking about trying this in a year or two, so what kind of skills might it be a good idea to pick up to make myself into a valuable employee?

                Hope to hear from you...

                  Ike,

Mafia Hill it was , lived on the one on the corner edge facing directly over the Royal and out across the ocean (the nicest one view wise I must say) I know wayne very well made my daily half hour ride on the Jet Ski's
he use to rent.Played volleyball everyday Scott, Billy ,Vic myself and a few others. I am sure we probably ran into each other more then once. Those were some good times. An yeah our lazy asses just use to cab it up the hill if we didnt have a car that day.

Not Vic, I at one time did work at your former employer. I was curious as if it was you. The crew often wanted to know if you where still around. Good luck and take care.
