  • Williams Hill, etc., practices

    Cons,

I wasn't saying that they didn't pay, what I was saying is that I have read that in England bets are not legally enforceable by either party, i.e. if you were betting on credit and didn't want to pay, you wouldn't have to, and likewise for someone like William Hill if they didn't want to, I didn't say that they didn't do it - have seen the odd news story about a bit multiple not being paid

and some of the said books I have read on betting from the UK suggest that their practice is to remove or limit people who win consistently - i.e. they are so used to ripping off punters with odds and betting trebles winners aren't tolerated? Didn't Shaun have a story like this - one of them stopped letting him bet on single games?

If a bookmaker doesn't pay, then their license can be revoked. Yeah, the punter always gets the short end of the deal. I think there was a win limit on a certain parlay made by a punter, but he wasn't informed about it and the book let him parlay a few more teams than he had to to reach that limit. He simply could have chosen less teams and the win would have been the same.

Credits bets on spread betting are recoverable by law. They can get it back from you. Don't know about regular bets though.

The singles thing isn't the UK bokomakers' fault. Domestic rules state that singles are ONLY allowed on games that are broadcast live.

Since most bookmakers have moved offshore, they don't have to adhere to this. I believe Shawn was with Hill's offshore division, which can accept unrestricted singles, but decided to limit him anyway. Now that's bad.

      Yeah, it was William Hill.

My experience is still in the review I did of VC and William Hill in the archives of this site, but briefly:

I asked them over and over when I opened up if they'd take singles on Premier, Spanish Liga, and Serie A. "Absolutely." "Certainly." "Yes, sir." "That's one reason we're on the Isle of Man." "Singles, 'you bet'. "

Then I won a few bets at around $100 a pop and it was goodbye singles. So I middled out my balance and never returned.

Doubt I would under any circumstanbces-- more than in any other business, a bookmaker's word should be his bond...especially with small punters like me who won't be breaking the company's bank anytime soon.

Cons - yeah, obviously no regulatory problems with spread betting, as that is regulated by the financial bodies

Shawn - thanks for confirmation and that my memory is the same, pretty amazing to boot a 100 dollar a game winner - did you win 33 in a row or something?
