  • An alternative to DAS?

With Darwin AllSports (DAS) not offering baseball for at least a few weeks (according to them), this sounds like an interesting alternative.

    (from RGTOnline.com)
SYDNEY, Australia, July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Australia is set to become the international hub of sports betting with the launch of http://www.sportodds.com.au today by NSW Gaming and Racing Minister, The Hon. Richard Face MP.

The SportOdds' site is the first sports betting Internet site in New South Wales and offers punters the availability of up to 23 sports with 24-hour access. Odds are continuously updated and the minimum bet via the Internet site is only $1.00.

"I am confident that the launch of bookmaker Internet sports betting in New South Wales will represent an important step in continuing to ensure that punters have local access to very competitive odds in a secure and well-regulated wagering environment," Mr. Face said at the launch.

According to SportOdds' Chief Executive Officer, Con Kafataris, the site is just the beginning of a series of changes that will sweep the bookmaking industry in Australia over the next 10 years.

"The platform from which the Australian bookmaking industry operates will be overhauled throughout the next decade," Mr. Kafataris says. "Continued innovations will revolutionise the business and will make it increasingly easy for punters to bet and win across an ever increasing range of sports."

"Public demand is making it clear that the way forward in the Australian wagering industry is by providing service to punters and by using technology to make access simpler for everyone who wants to participate. The challenge to all bookmakers is to meet the expectations of our punters."

"The launch of the SportOdds site represents this new era and sets the standard for the industry across the country," Mr. Kafataris says.

The site was developed by TSG Australia using the latest in Microsoft e-commerce technology.

"This is a great example of Australian innovation combining with local expertise to provide better service and facilities over the World Wide Web," says Harvey Sanchez, SR Product Marketing Manager, Microsoft Internet Group.

Mike Smith, TSG Australia's Manager, Software Development, said one of the big challenges in developing the site was making it both safe and secure.

"Private password security and personalisation provide secure access to account information, bet placement and sport results. The site will fall back into a 'safe mode' if the client leaves their computer unattended for more than a few moments," Mr. Smith says.

"The Internet will revolutionise the wagering industry. Better information means better results. This sort of technology will see clients using their computers, televisions or even their mobile phones to check results and place bets over the web at the touch of a button within a few years. It also means access from almost anywhere in the world."

Mr. Kafataris says that Australia, and in particular New South Wales, are already popular with international punters because of the security of bets offered by the State Government regulation of the industry and the guarantees of the NSW Bookmakers' Co-operative: "It is anticipated that the introduction of this Internet service will encourage even faster growth from the international sector."

Since the sports betting industry was legalised in New South Wales in April 1997, industry turnover has increased from $4.7 million in the 1996/97 financial year to $38.9 million in the 1997/98 financial year. Substantial increases are also set to be recorded this year.

SportOdds, founded in October 1995 by the Kafataris family, is one of the most successful Australian sport gambling operations, with 87 percent of market share in New South Wales. It was first company to be granted a sports betting license in New South Wales in April 1997.

Mr. Kafataris says SportOdds will continue to invest in technology to further develop the web site and improve services to new and potential customers. "We believe our company is inventive in the information technology area and the opportunities to enhance what is already an impressive array of options is very exciting," he says.

Sport enthusiasts can access the following 19 sports 24 hours a day, with more to come online in the near future:

    Athletics Surfing
    Baseball Tennis
    Boxing Yacht Racing
    Australian Rules Football American Football
    Basketball Motor Racing
    Cricket Rugby Union
    Golf Surf Lifesaving
    Ice Hockey Swimming
    Rugby League Triathlon

    Yes, they have revamped recently.

Not sure you will get a 10c line out of them though - something Canbet does have, and Megasports, as far as Australia goes.

Centrebet's is of the 20c type variety.

They deal a 25 cent baseball line - not much of a replacement for DAS.

Well, I tried to open an account and found out their online credit card authorization was not working yet. They did give a local number to call.

I didn't check their baseball lines, but you're right, if they
do deal a 25-cent line, they are totally unsuitable for baseball
(unless maybe for parlying favorites and/or runlines). Wonder what kind of lines they deal for surfing and swimming?!!!

So, all I can say is, c'mon DAS,
what's taking so long to put baseball back up? Get on the ball!!!!

Well, read in the DAS et. al.
prospectus that they have hired an American Sports manager, and are looking at doing an American Sports Site.

not quite sure if this will stand alone or not, and not quite sure why? Unless they are looking at adding some sophisticated football parlay card or something like that, but still not quite sure why you would not run the other one while this is going on? People would still use it, and turnover = cash (speaking as a prospective shareholder of course).

Not quite sure why, might have to ask 'em. Does not seem to make sense - can't even really think of a programming reason.

I haven't talked to Scott for a while (dry account), so I just can take a wild guess.

            a) They are putting more effort preparing on the coming football season, probably a newsite and probably accept US currency.

            b) Well, there are some many huge "steam move" lately in baseball, if you can move you live line quick and probably, you will be easily got burned. Remember, DAS is located at another time zone and there are about 15 hrs time gap, they used to have a 24 hr shift ( but not sure about now, its costly in the slow season), and their limit is pretty high. If they can just attract a low volume of small bets of their "average" customers, why take the risk of being killed by some wiseguys? Not a very good move but I can understand that.
