BYU vs. Texas Preview and Pick

BYU kicked off life as an Independent last week with a nice win over Ole Miss and now move on to play it’s 2nd road Game in a row as they travel to Texas to play the Longhorns who are fresh off an opening day win over Rice. Texas opened up as a -6.5 favorite and the early money has moved that line to a solid -7 across the board.

This matchup is one of the most intriguing of the week. You have a team in Texas that for the first decade of the 2000’s did nothing but win 10, 11 and 12 and even 13 Games a year, year in and year out, only to stumble last year to a 5-7 finish with losses to teams like Baylor and Iowa State. To say that expectations are high this year would be an understatement.

In comes BYU, a  team with their own winning traditions, also notching several 10+ win seasons over the last decade and very eager to prove themselves as an Independent in high profile Games such as this one.

We’re just not sure what to expect from Texas. Was last year a fluke? What went wrong? This is a program that has recruited the best talent in the country for years. Last seasons performance was alarming, and not just the losses. The wins they did manage, were for the most part, all close Games against teams they historically plastered.

BYU has been able to play with the big boys in the past. Mostly teams like TCU and Utah although they did beat Oklahoma 14-13 in 2009. They have 10 returning starters on the offense but the CouGArs are going to need to do a better job this week than they did at Ole Miss where they trailed 13-0 and needed a fumble recovery in the end zone by the defense to notch the win.

No strong opinion here, but the feeling is that this Texas team is more more talented than the 5-7 record of a year ago would suggest. We’ll lean towards the Longhorns -7 here, a weak lean at that. If the BYU offense wakes up they could make this one interesting. Weak opinion Texas -7
